Different Types of Ultra Violet Disinfection
Devices
A little understanding of the system and its construction
would assist in appreciating the process of Ultra
Violet treatment. In a typical ultra violet treatment
device, there is a cylindrical chamber that houses the
ultra violet bulb along its central axis. The bulb is
encased by a quartz glass sleeve and the whole unit is
so designed that the water flows parallel to the bulb.
The bulb surely requires electrical power to work and
radiate the required energy to incapacitate organisms.
To ensure that the water does not flow past the bulb too
fast so that there is appropriate radiation contact time,
the unit is equipped with a flow control device. Many
studies have also established that turbulent (agitated)
water flow provides more complete exposure of the organism
to ultra violet radiation. This is now being ensured in
newer models of Ultra
Violet treatment devices.
In a good Ultra Violet treatment device, the unit should
be housed in a body of stainless steel so as to provide
protection to any electronic parts from corrosion. To
assure they will be contaminant-free, all welds in the
system should be plasma-fused and purged with argon gas.
When choosing one Ultra Violet unit
over another - the major differences in ultra violet treatment
units is in their capacity and optional features. Some
advanced units that are safety conscious are equipped
with ultra violet emission detectors that warn the user
when the unit needs cleaning or when the light source
is failing. Features such as this are very important to
assure safe water supply. The warning systems could in
the form of a light or a pro-active system that shuts
off the water supply in case of failing safety standards.
Therefore, a detector that emits a sound or shuts off
the water flow is preferable to a warning light. This
is especially applicable when the system might be located
where a warning light would not be noticed immediately.
This factor must be kept in mind when selecting an Ultra
Violet treatment unit for your home usage.
